Year 1 Hedgehogs and Squirrels were a hive of industry this week when parents joined the children in school building castles.  With the seriousness that seemed to surround it we probably should have given it a grander title like ‘The Great Year 1 British Castle Building Competition’!  It was really lovely to welcome so many parents, grandparents and family members into school for an afternoon of fun and learning together.  I know the children really enjoyed it as did the parents.

Year 1 also had an absolutely fantastic time at Warwick Castle on their school trip. We were so impressed with how calmly and sensibly they moved around the castle, and how excited they were about the whole experience! We managed to squeeze so many activities in throughout the day, including walking along the battlements and up the spiral staircases to the very top of the tower! Some children were also brave enough to go down into the depths of the dungeon. They informed the rest of us that it was very cold and indeed, very smelly!  After lunch we met the very kind and beautiful Princess Florence, who read us a story and then taught us about how different shields are designed. Afterwards, the children had the opportunity to explore the inside of the castle, including the great hall, the bedrooms, the ballroom and the library.  All in all, a brilliant day was had by all.

Last week we had a real treat when Year 1 performed their wonderful class assembly.  First they wowed us with their retelling of two stories they have learned in their Talk 4 Writing which they did as a battle between two sides like a dance off!  The children spoke so clearly and knew the stories so well.  Then they sang us all a song and finished with a slide show of their fantastic afternoon with parents castle building a few weeks ago.
