Mathematics at Hayfield Cross

Please also see our Intent-Implementation-Impact statement for Maths and all subjects which can be found under the Curriculum tab in 'Curriculum Statements'

At Hayfield Cross C of E Primary School, we have adopted a mastery approach in order to deliver the three aims of the National Curriculum, fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

We believe in promoting mathematicians who are well equipped to apply their learning to the wider world environment. We ensure this happens by challenging and encouraging all pupils to excel in maths and to ‘Be Brave’. New mathematical concepts are introduced using a ‘Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract’; approach; enabling all children to experience hands-on learning when discovering new mathematical concepts/topics, and allows them to have clear models and images to aid their understanding. Our approach aims to provide all children with full access to the curriculum, enabling them to develop independence, confidence, competence, logical reasoning and the ability to think in abstract ways within all areas of mathematics. To support our teaching, particularly for learners using the concrete approach, we use a range of mathematical resources including Numicon, Base10, counters, place value cards etc. These are all stored in easily accessible ‘Maths Toolkits’ which the children access independently throughout our maths lessons. We also use a range of planning resources including those provided by the White Rose Hubs, NCETM and NRICH to support us in delivering our exciting, hands on lessons.

We know how important it is for our children to learn their times tables, but it can be quite tricky and not particualrly exciting! We use Times Tables Rock Stars (or TTRS) which is a maths programme that  has a proven track record of boosting children’s fluency and recall in multiplication and division.

What is Times Tables Rock Stars?

Times Tables Rock Stars is an award-winning learning platform where children practise their times tables like a rock star! It's a question-based game that automatically adapts to each child’s learning needs, helping them recall their times tables in record speed.  It can be accessed on any device, either through the app or browser, meaning children can play anytime, anywhere.
